Top 10 Myths

MYTH: Training bras teach your breasts to grow.
FACT: Your breasts have their own plan for growth; they require no instruction. Training bras just provide support and coverage for newly developing, sensitive breasts.

MYTH: Your breasts finish growing a year after your period starts.
FACT: The whole process of breast development takes about ten years from the very beginning inside changes to the final finishing touches. But the part that you see on the outside takes an average of four years—no matter when you start.

MYTH: If you’re still flat-chested at age sixteen, they’re never going to grow.
FACT: Breast growth starts when your body is ready— beginning at age seven or any time up to age twenty. The age you start breast development has no impact on your final breast size.

MYTH: You reach your full breast size when you reach your full height.
FACT: You reach your full height within a few years of getting your period but your breasts can keep on growing into your twenties. Your breast shape and size change as your body fills in and rounds out.

MYTH: Uneven breasts never even out.
FACT: No two breasts are ever exactly the same size. About 20 percent of girls are very uneven during puberty. Most breasts even out over time: only about 5 percent of adult women are significantly lopsided.

MYTH: Sleeping on your side can make your breast size uneven.
FACT: Your sleeping position does not affect breast growth. Even side-sleepers move and turn all night long, allowing a healthy circulation of blood and other fluids that delivers hormones for breast growth.

MYTH: Bras can block breast development and cause breast cancer.
FACT: Wearing a bra does not stop the growth of your breasts and does not increase the risk of cancer. A bra that’s comfortable and fits properly will give the support you need and allow healthy circulation of blood and other fluids.

MYTH: Breasts will sag if you don’t wear a bra both night and day.
FACT: Wearing a bra during the day supports your breasts as you lead an active life. Over time, without proper support, your breasts’ inside delicate network of shock absorbers, the Cooper’s ligaments, can stretch out, making your breasts droop. Wearing a bra at night is unnecessary. It’s best to give your breasts a bra break to maximize comfort and flow of fluids in and out of your breast tissue. If your breasts are extra sensitive and you want support during the night, use a snug undershirt or a loose, soft sleeping bra.

MYTH: Once you get stretch marks, they never go away.
FACT: When you’re growing really quickly and your skin can’t expand fast enough—little tears can form at the bottom surface of your skin. These are stretch marks and nearly all girls get them. Over time, the little tears heal, the pink color fades, the puffy lines flatten out, and you can barely see them.

MYTH: Breast implants are harmless.
FACT: Breast implant surgery involves risks, including infection, discomfort, and extra scar tissue. It can limit a mammogram’s ability to see the whole breast and it might interfere with breast feeding. Bras and clothing can give you a fuller figure in much healthier and varied ways.
