Chapter Seven
Self-Image & Teasing: Standing Up For Yourself
and Feeling Your Personal Power

My mom told me I could stuff the top of my dress with some of my brother's socks.
Sara, 12

Once this kid on my bus said that I stuff my bra, when I definitely don't, and I took that personally because I HATE it when people make fun of me.
Alyssa, 12

A guy told me he wouldn't go out with me because my boobs were too small.
Erin, 15

I was the first person in my grade to get a bra, and I was teased a little for about a day.
Hailey, 10

My friend told me I was flat as a board. She wasn't trying to hurt me, but I felt a little insulted.
Trinity, 11

Lots of times, my friend says my chest is small but hers is way smaller than mine! She just wears a padded bra to cover it up and then she makes fun of others.
Brooklyn, 16

My friends and I are smaller than most girls our age. One boy was trying to be funny while we were all joking about it at school and said, ‘The only straight A's you’ve got are right there (pointing to our breasts)!’
Riley, 14

In 7th grade I got called ‘tissues’ for no reason. What was worse was that it was my friends who did it to me. I never did use tissues (or anything else) to make my breasts look bigger yet everyone believed it because of a stupid rumor!
Lily, 18

Someone asked a friend of mine if she would rather trade breast sizes with me (she has pretty big ones). Then my ‘friend’ looked me right in my eyes and said, ‘No way! Why would I ever want to be flat?!’
Aaliyah, 12

Guys would like stare, as a joke, but it gets annoying and I don't think guys understand it. They think that the attention would be good, but it's embarrassing.
Jenya, 15

I walked by a bunch of boys and they mooed at me to make fun of me.
Mary-Kate, 10

Most of my friends are bigger than me, so they make jokes. They are all B's and I'm an A. One of them is a C and I'm so jealous!
Jovita, 14

My family jokes around that my breasts are too big because they don't know where they come from, since all my relatives/family members have small ones.
Francisca, 18

My friend was teased with a poem: roses are red, violets are black, why is your front, as flat as your back?
Annie, 13

I just laughed off what they said. You can't take yourself or what they say too seriously! When the bully sees you getting upset, they'll keep teasing. If they see that it doesn't bother you, they'll let it go. However, if someone continued to tease me about my breasts, I would take more serious action. I would probably talk to them about it.
Dana, 17

I think it’s best to just ignore the teasing. Either they're just jealous or they're insecure with themselves. If you don't have a nasty come back to say to them, then they will stop teasing you.
Sam, 15

Well we all grow at a different pace, so what? Maybe you’re too big or small. Who is to say what is normal?
Ming, 16
